Vday

What else to do on Valentines Day. Cruise to the bowling alley, have some beers, and watch the Warriors while live blogging. Or Mobloging or whatever it is. Anyway here’s a view from my perspective.

I came home and this was sleeping as I walked in. Kind of scary.

Pretty little butterflies

This time of year the monarchs migrate to Natural Bridges. I took a cruise there to check it out. There were a school bus full of kids getting the tour along with bunch of old people.
The monarhs aren’t swarming the whole area yet but it’s still a neat sight to see. Just sitting there watching them just makes you go ‘Awwww’.

Nihon Buyo

I checked out Kevin & Kim’s aunt’s Japanese dance show last Saturday.

Here’s a video of the last dance, Soran Bushi followed by a taiko performance.

(Work Song Version) Herring fishing brought thousands of migrant workers to Hokkaido, Japan’s northern island, each spring until early this century. Songs accompanied each stage of fishing, such as rowing and net-hauling. “Soran Bushi” was sung while transferring the herring from large drift-nets into small taxi-boats with giant hand-nets. The abundant lyrics are often improvised, erotic or comical – helping to keep workers awake during several days without sleep.

Holy shit I caught a striper!

Posted in All, Podcast at 7:57 pm by Rodfather

I was lazing around today and while flipping through the TV channels, River Runs Through It was showing. It was toward the end right when Brad Pitt caught the big one. That was motivation enough to go fishing.

I switched poles before I went. I was using the 7′ Daiwa I’ve been always using, but I switched to my Dad’s 9-10′ pole.

I went to the normal spot at Pajaro Dunes. At around the 3rd & 4th step.
When I got there, right away I caught a good sized perch. I called Brian and he arrived shortly after.

A bit after he showed up, something really huge got hooked. It just ran off, practically using up all my line. I kept fighting it for about 10-15 minutes, all while walking down the beach 50 meters or so.

When it got close, we could tell, it was a huge ass striper bass. I mean this thing was huge looking in the water. Brian went out there to it when it was about 10 feet away. The line suddenly snapped and then Brian goes ‘Oh SHIT!’ and basically jumped on the fucker. He ended up cutting up his hand but the fish was landed.

I’m basically speechless catching this big ass fish. I mean, shit, I don’t believe I caught this right off the shore.

I stopped by at Big 5 on the way home and bought a scale. It ended up being 15 lbs, 36 inches. It felt like a lot more than that while carrying it though. Maybe the scale is off. :p Actually I think it is since the cheap thing just broke after pulling on it. The needle is stuck at 5 lbs instead of zero. So I’ll just say it’s a 20 lb hah.

Natural Bridges

Posted in All, Podcast at 10:28 pm by Rodfather

I packed my fishing gear this morning. I wanted to check out fishing at Natural Bridges after work since it’s right next door.
I didn’t get a bite at all. There was too much seaweed washing up too.

It’s nice out there though. I should visit more often.
