That was motivation enough to go fishing. I switched poles before I went. I was using the 7′ Daiwa I’ve been always using, but I switched to my Dad’s 9-10′ pole. I went to the normal spot at Pajaro Dunes. At around the 3rd & 4th step. When I got there, right away I caught a good sized perch. I called Brian and he arrived shortly after. A bit after he showed up, something really huge got hooked. It just ran off, practically using up all my line. I kept fighting it for about 10-15 minutes, all while walking down the beach 50 meters or so. When it got close, we could tell, it was a huge ass striper bass. I mean this thing was huge looking in the water. Brian went out there to it when it was about 10 feet away. The line suddenly snapped and then Brian goes ‘Oh SHIT!’ and basically jumped on the fucker. He ended up cutting up his hand but the fish was landed. I’m basically speechless catching this big ass fish. I mean, shit, I don’t believe I caught this right off the shore. I stopped by at Big 5 on the way home and bought a scale. It ended up being 15 lbs, 36 inches. It felt like a lot more than that while carrying it though. Maybe the scale is off. :p Actually I think it is since the cheap thing just broke after pulling on it. The needle is stuck at 5 lbs instead of zero. So I’ll just say it’s a 20 lb hah. High tide was suppose to be late, like around 9:00PM. So the tide was still fairly low when we started casting. After just a few casts, I felt a nibble on my line and yanked quickly. The nibbling kept coming and right away, a huge smile formed on my face. Words can’t explain what I was feeling at that moment. Well, actually a lot of words came to mind: ‘Fuck ya!’ ‘Wooo hoooo!’ ‘Aw fresh! I finally caught one!’ I turned to Brian and started screaming passed the loud crashing of the waves. “Dude! I got one!” I yelled. He just laughed and started walking over to make sure. I reeled in a tiny, little perch. It was maybe 5 inches long. I didn’t care. It was the first fish I caught since I started. All the struggles of going out each time without even a bite was forgotten. If there were any regrets of moving back up north, at that moment, those thoughts quickly washed away. I’m back and I just caught a fish in my hometown. Perch fishing. The generations of my family, fishing on the shores of Watsonville, has continued on to the next. I just felt so happy. It was truly a momentous occasion as if I passed through a Rite of Passage. Throughout the day, I ended up catching 4 more fish. They were all too small to bring back except for the last one. It was getting late and I was going to cast a few more times before packing up. I felt a hard tug and could tell it was a lot bigger than the others. It wasn’t very hard to reel in actually but was so happy to find out it was big enough to bring home. Catching this one was definitely the icing on the cake. To be able to bring back home a fish is a great feeling. It’s like if the world was coming to an end and there wasn’t any electricity or any means to food, all I would need is a pole and some bait to provide food. Fresh. I bowled probably 5 games. Grubbed 2 hotdogs for 50 cents. My high game was a 189, but overall, I sucked. Once I got some beers in me, my body felt a little more relaxed and just tossed the ball without a thought and ended up hitting most of my spares. Anyway, most important, it was karaoke night with Chris. Every Friday he hosts karaoke night. His song list comprises of mostly country but a fair list of classics and pop. It’s usually a mix of hicks with old & new school mexicans in the bar. The younger mexican chicks sing the latest KDON R&B hits while the hicks sing their regular country songs. For some reason, I feel really comfortable in that environment. It feels like family the way everyone treats each other. Unfortunately, I didn’t sing tonight. I wasn’t able to drink enough to sing some Tony Bennett or John Denver like I did on previous Fridays. It wasn’t in the cards this night. There was this one chick who wanted me to sing ‘Hey Jude’ with her but that’s just sad. On a side note, a gang of Mio’s were bowling tonight. Matt was there with Suzanne. Michelle showed up with her husband. She is currently in Michigan and running her own business. She usually comes back to town during July for weddings/funerals and for New Years. For now, I’m going to try to get used to surf fishi[...] Since it’s Summer, I felt it’s a good time to go fishing. It doesn’t get dark around here until around 9PM so thought it would be nice to do some fishing right after work. For now, I’m going to try to get used to surf fishing for perch. I went over to Big 5 with Brian on Tues and picked up a pole & reel. I have a bunch of poles at home, but decided to get a new one since the reel I had was kind of torn up. I have all the other gear I could ever need. I searched through the garage and found all of my dad’s old fishing stuff. The line that came with my reel is kind of light. I’ll probably replace it with a 10 lb line. I didn’t get a bite at all that night. We were only out there for about 45 minutes and most of that time was just setting up. In the slow mo shot, there was someone in a stretcher. On the radio it said the person was most likely fatigued and veered into the center divider, then hitting another car driving northbound. There were a lot of people standing outside of their cars in the traffic jam. Nobody was going anywhere and it was way hot. Most of the people were probably heading to the beach. From my post on the GR boards 6/08/2006 11:56PM: I bowled a couple of games tonight. I did a lot better actually. My first game I bowled a 181 and the second game a 143. I learned something tonight. I release the ball too early. The lanes I’m bowling on are known to be really dry, so I should release my ball at least a foot passed by lead foot so that my ball will break late. I got to test out my cheap ass crappy hybrid camera too. It’s real bad in low light but you can tell what’s going on. The audio is a bit off too which is more of an issue, but at least I can see how my approach and release is now. Forgive my quick editing and ghetto titles. It was fun.
