Tanko Bushi 2007

Posted in All, Podcast at 3:14 pm by Rodfather

Another year. I took some video of the Watsonville Obon. Here’s a video of the last song, “Tanko Bushi” where everyone can join in. Some of the kids up there singing are my cousin’s kids.

Found pics of old Commodore gear

Posted in All, Tech at 1:40 am by Rodfather

I mentioned in the last post about having a 300 bps modem and a tablet for my Commodore 128.
I was able to find pics of them online. I hope I still have that stuff. I’m pretty sure it’s buried in boxes somewhere.. or sold in a garage sale.
I remember the tablet was actually very functional. It came with a simple paint program to draw pictures.

I’ve Been Tagged by Minda
Hehe, I’ve been included in a blog game
and found a cool inkblog.
http://minda-yoak.livejournal.com/.
Ok so I’m suppose to list 8 random
things about me eh? Well let’s
get to it.
1) The first modem I had was 300 bps
on a Commodore 128.
2) I used to have a desert tortoise
that I randomly found.
3) My first tablet was a
Wacom-like tablet for the Commodore
that plugged into the joystick port.
4) When I was in Little League,
our All Star team was one game away
from reaching the World Series
tournament in Williamsport, PA.
5) Addicted to singing karaoke
and streaming my performance online.
6) I grind my teeth when I’m sleeping
7) I’ve been lactose intolerant
since I was 18. (I miss milk shakes)
8) When I was in college, I tripped
out on shrooms so hard I thought
I was a demigod.
I shall tag…

Test moblog with blip.tv

Posted in All, Moblog, Podcast at 3:31 pm by Rodfather

This is a test to see if blip.tv will encode to .m4v and hopefully embed the video in the rss so it’ll show up in the iTunes directory. Hopefully later it can encode to flash automatically and show an inline flash player as well. Right now, I think it’ll only encode to one format if uploaded from a phone.

edit:
Well, it didn’t convert to .m4v for some reason. It used quicktime to play the .3gp file instead. Oh well. I’ll just set flash as the default. I’m pretty sure it’ll embed the .3gp file for use in the iPod directory. We’ll see.

edit2:
Well, it looks like I have to upload a .m4v version anyway and use podPress to do it.
This is because I’m using the feed http://phonyholmes.com/wp/?feed=podcast for the iTunes directory and only posts that use podPress go there.
Also, Blip.tv doesn’t convert to more than one video format. It’s cool that it’ll do flash video for me. That’s one less step I have to worry about.

Test 2

Test 2

edit:
This is a moblogging test. I recorded a short clip on my phone. Emailed to blip.tv. It encoded the .3gp video to flash, and then made a blog post here. It even links to the original file.
The encoding to flash got screwed up somehow. Hopefully, this won’t happen all the time.
Thanks to Josh for giving me a heads up on blip.tv.
I’ll try to do more moblogging from now on.

Caricature Avatar

Posted in All at 5:53 pm by Rodfather

I wanted to see if I could make a caricature of myself to use as an avatar.

Looking online, there are some avatar creators using preset face parts, but it didn’t turn out very well.
Here one of them: Digibody’s Caricature Maker
And the result:

So I tried messing around with Flash 8. Wanted to see if I could make a semi-cartoonish caricature of myself using a photo as a guide to outline over. So no big head cartoon figure. Basically, it’s just an outline.

I’m not used to using flash, but I guess it came out ok. I need to use a better picture next time.

Yamash asks how it was at the bowling alley

Posted in All at 12:40 am by Rodfather

It was pretty awesome actually.

It was quiet tonight. Just Cindy at the bar. Dana and Paul were there at first. Just chillin and reading the paper. That was around 7:20. I was talking to him about the iPhone coming out the end of the month. He said he’ll probably wait until the hype fades.

Norman was going off, over and over and over on saying the owner of the airport said a few years ago it hit 130 degrees, 3 days in a row, in Watsonville. Because the conversation started out saying, “Fuck it’s hot right now.”

I said bullshit. There’s no way it would hit 130 in Watsonville. I mean, shit. If it was 130, then it would be 150 in San Jose. Deserts don’t even hit 130 degrees. But Norman is Norman. And he said the dude who owns the airport records the temperature every day and that he never lied to him before.

So haha ya, I’ll agree with Norman just because.

Anyway, Chris was all set up for karaoke.

Thing was, Lisa, that one old chick who flashed her tits that one night, who looks like an orc; always cussing and complaining about some shit.. borrowed Chris’ entire Karaoke CD collection… and hasn’t showed up.

First of all, why the fuck would he do that?

Anyway, almost the entire night was with no music with no words coming out the screen.

It was a bit sad at first. Chris is all stressing out. Announcing to the crowd, all dissing Lisa since he didn’t have shit. It was pretty hilarious at some points. Almost like stand up comedy with him venting.

Everyone around the bar was joking around. Saying it’s accapella night or Impromptu karaoke.

“If you know the words to the songs in your head and can sing without music, come up!”

Haha it sucked for that dude. How can you run a Karaoke night, with no pay, only working on with tips, and have no songs? That’s pretty fucked up.

So fuck it, I had my phone on me. And I brought my music player. I’ll just look up the lyrics on my phone and hook up my player to his music system and at least the regulars who never sing but just enjoy the atmosphere can enjoy the Friday Night Karaoke at Cabrillo Lanes they are used to (you know who I’m talking about. The relatives to Chris who are always sitting at the first table). Just want them to have a good time.
At first.. Chris was trying to do what he could, with what he he had. He hooked up his iPod to the system and at least played some tunes he had at the moment.. eventually singing along to the songs he knew by heart.

Anyway, I said “Hey Chris, I’ll sing.” With no music. With no words. I walked up with my mp3 player in one hand, and in the other hand, my phone, with a web browser showing a googled web site, with the lyrics to the song I was about to sing. Haha.

Aw ya, Roy Orbison. “In Dreams”

After that, some random old dude came up to me later blurbing some drunken shit giving me props. Haha.
One cool thing about plugging in my music player was, I could sing the songs that were never on the list. At times, I let whatever song was left on the next track play, just because there wasn’t much music around. The whole sound system was plugged into my music player. Was DJ for a bit.

Johan brought CD’s and sang crap. Then Sandy, the one with the hat, who sings the old school classics, brought her own CD’s and sang along having a good time.

Haha, I probably sang like 5 songs though Basically monopolized the mic. Nobody else had access to lyrics, or their own tunes haha. That’s fucked up.

So then later that night, someone calls and it ends up, that chick Lisa who borrowed all the CD’s from Chris, was arrested. Hahaha. Damn ghetto ass. So her sister is suppose to cruise by the bowling alley later that night to drop off the Karaoke CD’s. That was a huge relief.
Before that, we were all joking around and checking the Register Pajaronian saying in a phony voice, “hey there’s an ad here.. Someone is selling Karaoke CD’s.”

It was toward the end of the night, around last call, when jailbait’s sister arrived.

Everyone in the bar gave a sympathy clap But it was festive. Almost like a standing ovation, only too lazy to stand up. It was too funny. I felt sorry for the sister since she really felt bad about the situation
But with what the crowd had to deal with tonight and taking it in stride, it was like the icing on the cake. We get another consecutive week of the chicken on the train song sang live. Hahahaha. And it felt good singing along to that horrible song. Just because of all that crap that happened.

So hell ya. You should have been there. It was awesome.
