Discovering new music
I’ve been a fan of music subscription services the past year. I’ve tried them all which include Yahoo To Go, Rhapsody, Napster, and Urge.com.
Right now I’m subscribed to Urge.com. Since I have the Samsung Q1, I don’t need to pay the additional cost of transfering tracks to my MP3 player. I can just use my tablet to play the music directly. So all I need to do is download tracks, and plug my tablet into my car. For $10/month, I feel this is an excellent deal to be able to access millions of songs on demand. It’s a great way to listen to new releases and discover new music. I definitely like this route compared to downloading $1/song on iTunes. You can still purchase tracks through the subscription services if you want to burn them to CD.
So anyway, I recently found Rodrigo Y Gabriel on Urge.com. They are a flamenco duo who cover metal songs.

I noticed they are performing in Santa Cruz at the end of the month. I’m going to check them out.
I told Nelson about these two and he pointed me to the “Pickin’ on..” series. This series is bluegrass music covering other artists.

It excites me finding out about music I never heard of. And it’s even more exciting that I’m able to listen to these albums right away since I have an Urge.com account. Being able to access millions of music instantly a wonderful thing and for $10/month, it’s a deal.
All these DRM issues isn’t a much of a concern to me. Just as long as I’m able to listen to the songs I want to NOW is important. I mean, if I want to have a personal copy of the music I really like, I’ll go to the music store and buy the CD.
