A Fair To Remember

Posted in All at 5:34 pm by Rodfather

I’m going to check out the Santa Cruz County Fair sometime this week.

My auntie Janice submitted another poem for competition.  She’s been submitting poems every year for about 6 years and was always getting 2nd or 3rd place.

She finally won the blue ribbon this year (with a bit of my help on editing and printing :) )

Here’s more info from an email from my cousin:

Hola, family and friends-
For those who don’t know already, mom decided one day 6 years ago to start writing poetry and enter them in the poetry contest at the Santa Cruz County fair. Every year from the time she started entering these poems, she has always placed 2nd or 3rd place. Well, she finally won 1st place this year and someone on the Fair board who writes articles in the local newspaper mentioned mom and how she hung in there for 6 years.
If you are going to be at the Fair this Saturday, she will be reciting her poem and receiving her blue ribbon with prize money. I think it is around 3 p.m., not sure though.
The title of the poem is the Fair’s theme and this is what each contestant must base their poems on.

So if you end up going to the fair, look out for this poem:

A Fair To Remember

Baby, we sure have come a long ways

Since horse drawn carriage and buggy days.

It’s not your grandpa’s Oldsmobiles.

It’s hydrogen highways and hybrid hot wheels.

IPod, Xbox and Nintendos.

Playstation, DVDs, Slingbox, and Tivos.

But the Santa Cruz County Fair is wine in its prime.

Ageing has made it more sweet and sublime.

So put on some sneakers and dungarees.

Forget the real world and its idiosyncrasies.

Be a kid again on opening day.

Ride the Ferris wheel in a frivolous way.

Chase the racing pigs going ‘round and around.

Do a jig with a pig to the big band sound.

Let go your pent up inhibitions.

Hop, skip and jump to your favorite exhibitions.

View veggies and fruit of incredible sizes,

Dressed in their best, vying for prizes.

Legos and dolls, an amazing collection.

Let’s vote for kids in the coming election.

Savor the flavor of ‘burgers and fries,

Jalapeño peppers that opens your eyes.

Pop a balloon in the bustling Midway.

Then end your day in a musical way.

Live performers are big barnstormers

And hot mariachis are global warmers.

You’re feeling cool so turn up the heat.

Stomp your feet to the Latin beat.

As you go dancing down the aisles,

Show the world the sunshine of your smiles.

Light up your life on a day in September.

One moment in time at “A Fair To Remember.”
