Nihon Buyo

Posted in All, Podcast at 8:48 pm by Rodfather

I checked out Kevin & Kim’s aunt’s Japanese dance show last Saturday.

Here’s a video of the last dance, Soran Bushi followed by a taiko performance.

(Work Song Version) Herring fishing brought thousands of migrant workers to Hokkaido, Japan’s northern island, each spring until early this century. Songs accompanied each stage of fishing, such as rowing and net-hauling. “Soran Bushi” was sung while transferring the herring from large drift-nets into small taxi-boats with giant hand-nets. The abundant lyrics are often improvised, erotic or comical – helping to keep workers awake during several days without sleep.

A Fair To Remember

Posted in All at 5:34 pm by Rodfather

I’m going to check out the Santa Cruz County Fair sometime this week.

My auntie Janice submitted another poem for competition.  She’s been submitting poems every year for about 6 years and was always getting 2nd or 3rd place.

She finally won the blue ribbon this year (with a bit of my help on editing and printing :) )

Here’s more info from an email from my cousin:

Hola, family and friends-
For those who don’t know already, mom decided one day 6 years ago to start writing poetry and enter them in the poetry contest at the Santa Cruz County fair. Every year from the time she started entering these poems, she has always placed 2nd or 3rd place. Well, she finally won 1st place this year and someone on the Fair board who writes articles in the local newspaper mentioned mom and how she hung in there for 6 years.
If you are going to be at the Fair this Saturday, she will be reciting her poem and receiving her blue ribbon with prize money. I think it is around 3 p.m., not sure though.
The title of the poem is the Fair’s theme and this is what each contestant must base their poems on.

So if you end up going to the fair, look out for this poem:

A Fair To Remember

Baby, we sure have come a long ways

Since horse drawn carriage and buggy days.

It’s not your grandpa’s Oldsmobiles.

It’s hydrogen highways and hybrid hot wheels.

IPod, Xbox and Nintendos.

Playstation, DVDs, Slingbox, and Tivos.

But the Santa Cruz County Fair is wine in its prime.

Ageing has made it more sweet and sublime.

So put on some sneakers and dungarees.

Forget the real world and its idiosyncrasies.

Be a kid again on opening day.

Ride the Ferris wheel in a frivolous way.

Chase the racing pigs going ‘round and around.

Do a jig with a pig to the big band sound.

Let go your pent up inhibitions.

Hop, skip and jump to your favorite exhibitions.

View veggies and fruit of incredible sizes,

Dressed in their best, vying for prizes.

Legos and dolls, an amazing collection.

Let’s vote for kids in the coming election.

Savor the flavor of ‘burgers and fries,

Jalapeño peppers that opens your eyes.

Pop a balloon in the bustling Midway.

Then end your day in a musical way.

Live performers are big barnstormers

And hot mariachis are global warmers.

You’re feeling cool so turn up the heat.

Stomp your feet to the Latin beat.

As you go dancing down the aisles,

Show the world the sunshine of your smiles.

Light up your life on a day in September.

One moment in time at “A Fair To Remember.”

League Bowling

Posted in All at 11:56 pm by Rodfather

I just started league bowling tonight. This is the first time I’ll be bowling in a league. So I’ll have an official average and all that. If I ever get crazy lucky and bowl a 300, I’ll even get a ring.. somewhat similar to a high school class ring. I sucked tonight though. I bowled a 130, 98 and a 161. I have a lot of work to do. I think our team might have won tonight though. That what really counts for me. I just want to win every week. I guess it’s my competitive nature. I don’t care about all the tournaments or any of that. I’m not the type of person who will bowl shitty in league so my handicap will be so bad that I will do good in tournaments. I want to win everytime… in the moment. Yet, it’s all fun though. This is the Sansei league. I guess there is no more Nisei league since that generation is getting old now. So all that’s left is the Sansei league. I was a bit disappointed on the turnout though. I guess there is just not a lot of people who want to continue on. It’s the times I guess.

I’m glad the Macias family joined in though. They are really good people. Daniel even gave me an invitation to his birthday party at the bowling alley next Saturday. I will try my best to attend this.

Tonight was also Karaoke night with Chris. I didn’t have time to sing since our league ended so late. We started late since it’s the first night and the teams had to be sorted out and all that before we could even start.

There’s one thing that kind of bugs me though. After everyone bowls a frame, it’s common that whoever is nearby, gives a high-five or a fist bump to the person. I don’t have a problem with that at all. The thing that bothers me is that that every fist bump or high five is so weak. I’m use to giving hand slaps at such force, everyone within 50 feet would hear it. Instead, it’s just a little pat.. and that just seems so gay. So I will try my best to make as much noise as possible whenever I slap someones hand.

Deep cleaning

Posted in All at 3:22 pm by Rodfather

I went back to the dentist again today. This time for Round 2 of deep cleaning. This is where the dentist shoots a needle into my gums to numb it up since it involves scraping all the gunk that builds up around the gums.

Last week I had the right side of my mouth done. The dentist numbed it up but didn’t get everything. It fucking hurt in the places it wasn’t numb. Today was the left side and he did a much better job. I didn’t feel a thing. When I rinsed my mouth out at the sink, I was dribbling water out of my left side when I tried with swish the water around.

So that’s it for the dentist for a while. There’s no way I’m going back to that ghetto ass place. The last time I went, the secretary was bitching at the dentist saying she won’t do this or that unless she gets more hours or a raise. All cussing in front of all the patients. That pissed the hell out of me. She was all bitching while the dentist was working on my mouth. He had to stop to go over and yell that if she doesn’t want to work, she can leave now. If it were me, I’d fire her ass right on the spot. Lazy ass Watsonville people.
